Duke of Edinburgh Award, also called ‘The International Award for Young People’ (IAYP), is the most adaptable and successful youth empowerment program recognized worldwide. It was first introduced in United Kingdom in 1956 with the aim to motivate young people to be involved in a balanced program of voluntary self-development activities.

The basic structure of the Award consists of 4 mandatory sections – Service, Adventurous Journey, Skills and Physical Recreation (and Residential Projects for Gold Award). There are 3 levels of the Award – Bronze, Silver & Gold. Anyone with perseverance and enterprise, including the differently – abled, can earn this Award as they choose activities appropriate to their environment and best suited to their own personal interests and talents.

More than 30,000 participants are currently undertaking the Program in India. IAYP encourages youngsters to be involved in a balanced program of voluntary activities that drives them towards the path of self-discovery, perseverance and responsibility towards themselves and their community. Those who participate in the Award are expected to follow its requirements in a non-competitive manner with a determination to succeed, either individually or as part of a team. The Award therefore is challenging, and can be undertaken at your own pace.

New activities allow students pursue their goals and interests outside of their standard academic curriculum. They not just gain some new skills but also develop their overall personalities. Students who are involved in such a program are often seen to develop better time management skills.
